Baccarat is one of the world's oldest and highly-sophisticated card games that for centuries, has captured the hearts of card game lovers. Its exact origin is still widely unknown and up to now, remain a hot issue and subject of debates among game historians.
Accordingly, one of the most popular theories of the origin of baccarat dates back to the middle ages. Baccarat was said to have been invented by Felix Falguierein, an Italian gambler, and was first played as Tarrochi. This game was believed to be the earliest version of baccarat and was played using a deck of Tarot cards.
Another source has noted that baccarat was based from an old Etruscan ritual of the nine gods that determines the fate of a woman with blonde hair through a throw of a die with nine sides. Each side of the die corresponds with a number, which is associated to a particular fate waiting for the blonde virgin.
A throw of the die that results in an eight or nine will make her a priestess. Six or seven on the other hand will ban her from participating in any other religious activity. And finally, a throw that results into a number less than six will put the blonde virgin to death.
From Italy, baccarat traveled in different countries of Europe. It became so popular that several versions of it were developed. When baccarat found its way to France in 1490 A.D., the French nobility fell in love with the game and made it exclusive to their class. Baccarat only became available to all levels of the French social stratum, when it was finally allowed to be played as one of the main card games in French casinos.
Through the years, baccarat became the most played card game in France. The French people have made baccarat their game of choice, thus, it is rare to see street, cafes and casinos not having a game of baccarat in progress. With this, it can be observed that baccarat features a huge amount of French influence. Some of the words used for several baccarat terms are of French origin.
Probably the most famous version of French baccarat is the "Chemin De Fer". This baccarat version literally mans, "Street of Fire", and was so famous that its popularity reached England. Later on, some of the rules of "Chemin De Fer" were altered and became known as "European Baccarat". This version found its way to South America and finally in the 1950s, baccarat was introduced by Tommy Renzoni in the United States of America.
At present, baccarat remains to be a highly sought after card game. Every casino is not complete without a baccarat game taking place. An online version of this well-loved card game is currently available to be enjoyed by a million more card game lovers. Time will pass and several other versions will emerge, but baccarat will always be the card game that brings out fun and satisfaction to everyone.
