Baccarat: A History Revisited

Baccarat is a gambling card game invented by an Italian gambler, Felix Falguierein during the middle ages. It was first played with the use of a deck of tarot cards and was then know as the game of Tarrochi.

It is generally believed that baccarat was derived from a pre-Roman civilization, Etrusci. This Etruscan ritual decides the fate of a blonde virgin woman through a nine-sided die. The result's of the woman's throw will determine whether she will be a priestess, be banned from participating to any other religious rituals and activities, or she will walk into the sea to die.

During the reign of King Charles VIII of France, baccarat was introduced to the country and instantly became a favorite game among the members of the French nobility. With this, baccarat became exclusive to the upper aristocratic class of France, until it was allowed to be played in French casinos.

The most popular French version of baccarat is "chemin de fer". The rules of this French version is almost the same as it is played today in most casinos in the United States. The main difference is a player, instead of the casino, banks the game. The title of the banker rotates among the players and the casino charges a definite amount of fee to the one holding the title. This baccarat version serves as the foundation from which the English version of the "European Baccarat" evolved from.

The American version we know today was mainly derived from the English version after the "European Baccarat" spread in South America. It was first played in the casinos of Havana, Cuba, especially in the renowned Capri Casino, before this version was introduced by Tommy Renzoni in the casinos of the United States during the 1950s. Baccarat became very much popular that it became one of the main attractions of the Dunes Casino, Nevada's premiere casino.

Baccarat has reached other continents as well. According to the largest casinos in Las Vegas, majority of the Asian tourist population has made baccarat their game of choice as evidenced by the number of Asians who flocked baccarat rooms. Even some of the "high rollers" come from the tourist from outside the country.

Online versions are now available for download and can be enjoyed at any time of the day right in the comforts of one's home. With this, it is not surprising that baccarat will continue to be one of the world's most favorite card games for several generations to come.
